An optician is a person who dispenses lenses, frames, contact lenses, or optical devices in accordance with a written prescription from a duly licensed physician or optometrist. An optician interprets, measures, adapts, fits and adjusts prescribed optical devices for the aid or correction of visual or ocular anomalies of the human eye.
An eyecare employee does not need to be licensed to work in an optical establishment, but to be in compliance with state law, a licensed optical establishment must employ a minimum of one AZ Licensed Dispensing Optician on a full-time basis per location, whose license must be prominently displayed for the public.
To become a licensed dispensing optician in the state of Arizona, you must have satisfied the education/apprenticeship requirements set by law, pass the ABO exam (American Board of Opticians) and the NCLE exam (National Contact Lens Examiners) and the Arizona State Board of Opticians practical examination. Proof of meeting continuing education requirements is necessary to renew and retain a dispensing opticians license.
As licensed opticians, we know the right questions to ask about YOUR vision; what you like and dislike, how you use your eyes everyday, what your work environment is, your hobbies, your individual eyewear needs. We also analyze the Dr.’s prescription and take the precise measurements needed to ensure the prescription your doctor so carefully wrote for you will work as it should. We will know the best type of lens and material for your prescription. This way we can recommend the correct lenses and products to give you the best vision possible.
We also guide our patients through the frame selection process. We want you to wear frames that are not only attractive, but that fit well and are suitable for your individual prescription and their purpose. Then we also help you decide which lens treatment options are appropriate for your needs.
When purchasing your eyewear from a licensed dispensing optician, you are purchasing from a professional optician who has demonstrated their technical skill and training before the AZ State Board of Opticians. We will take all the necessary accurate measurements, verify that your eyewear was made correctly, adjust frames so they will fit comfortably, verify the placement of your prescription correctly in front of your eyes, and service the products for you throughout the year with adjustments and repairs as needed.
In recent years, it has become possible to order cheap eyewear on-line from some computer sites. Let the buyer beware! There is no licensed professional doing all of the above mentioned services. When you experience problems, your eye doctor or licensed dispensing optician are not going to take care of these things for you since you did not purchase your eyewear from them.
Professional licensed opticians understand your prescription and want your eyewear to not only help you see well, but also look great and feel good. Thank you for letting us serve you!
